Cohort Charts Publishers Actually Use

Which cohort views earn a permanent place in a membership report, and which belong only in deep-dive sessions.

Not every cohort matrix belongs in a monthly board pack. The densest tables are useful in working sessions with product and membership leads; leadership usually needs a narrower set.

Three views tend to travel well: retention of the most recent four acquisition months, retention of the highest-value plan, and a simple comparison of organic versus campaign-sourced cohorts. Each answers a decision someone already asks.

Avoid compressing every plan into one cohort line when price points differ sharply. A premium annual membership and a low-cost monthly newsletter rarely share the same retention shape, and blending them flattens the story.

Caption every cohort plate with the definition of an active subscriber for that chart. Publishers who count grace periods differently will otherwise compare incompatible curves across quarters.
